More than 100,000 electric and plug-in vehicles on UK roads during 2017

By mid-2017, government and industry body Go Ultra Low says more than 100,000 plug-in cars will be on UK roads.

This landmark prospect is fuelled by record electric car registrations in 2016, a year in which volumes rose 29% on the previous 12 months.

From January to December, motorists flocked to buy electric vehicles in record numbers, with 36,907 electric vehicles registed in the UK. As thousands of motorists switched-on to the cost saving and convenience of electric motoring, public and business appetite for plug-in hybrid and pure electric cars reached a new high.

An ever-increasing selection of electric cars is playing a key role in plug-in vehicle uptake surpassing record levels, Go Ultra Low suggests. Today, more than 35 plug-in models are available to UK motorists – four times the number on the market just five years ago – with yet more new versions set to be launched this year.

Poppy Welch, head of Go Ultra Low, said: “Year after year, we see record levels of electric vehicle registrations as more and more motorists realise the cost-saving and environmental benefits of driving a plug-in electric car. With ongoing government incentives and increasing product choice we expect this trend to contiue, boosting the number of electric cars on UK roads beyond 100,000 by mid-2017.”

Plug-in hybrid uptake was particularly strong in 2016 as annual registrations rose 41.9%, with in-demand models such as the BMW 330e, Volkswagen Golf GTE and Audi A3 Sportback e-tron among the most popular. Every quarter in 2016 produced a year-on-year improvement, while the accumulative registrations total for all electrically powered cars now rests at 87,158.

KPMG Survey Results: Motorists will start to abandon car ownership in less than a decade

UK automotive executives expect that more than half of today’s car owners will not want to own a car in less than a decade, according to KPMG’s Global Automotive Executive Survey 2017.

The survey found that 74 per cent of UK automotive executives think that by 2025, more than half of car owners today will not want to own a vehicle, as self-driving technology and mobility as a service will take priority.

John Leech, UK Head of Automotive at KPMG, said: “The UK is particularly suited to the early adoption of self-driving cars consumed as a service. Our greenbelt policy has created a relatively dense urban population which, when coupled with our high fuel prices, means that so-called “robot taxis” offer a greater cost saving to the UK public, compared to European or North American markets. I believe robot taxis will revolutionise UK urban transportation in the second half of the next decade.”

The report findings revealed that 62 per cent of UK automotive executives view diesel technology as a thing of the past, expecting the traditional powertrain technology to eventually vanish from the manufacturers’ portfolio. Meanwhile, a staggering 93 per cent of UK automotive executives are planning to invest in the technology for battery electric vehicles over the next five years.

For the first time, battery electric vehicle technology has overtaken connectivity and digitalisation as the key trend in this year’s survey. The report revealed that 90 per cent of UK automotive executives expect battery electric vehicles to dominate the automotive marketplace by 2025.

“Improvements in the cost and range of battery technology, coupled with growing concern over the emission of both carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides from diesel engines, means that almost the whole automotive industry believes that the mass adoption of electric cars will happen during the next decade,” said Leech.

With consumers shifting to using cars but not owning them, it’s likely there will be fewer cars and therefore less money to be made from building vehicles in the future. This does not worry the majority of automotive executives: 85 per cent of the respondents said they are convinced that their company will generate higher revenues by providing new digital services, than selling cars alone.

“Carmakers plan to sell a myriad of new digital services to vehicle users. Today carmakers already make substantial profits from the sale of consumer finance and annual vehicle insurance but this will grow in the future as innovative services such as remote vehicle monitoring and the integration of the car as a focal point in people’s ever more connected lifestyles are demanded by consumers.

“For the auto industry this implies that pure product profitability is outdated. Carmakers’ success will not be evaluated solely on the quantity of vehicles sold, but on the customer value over the whole lifecycle – especially when the digital ecosystem will be ready for the market. So OEMs need to rethink. More than three out of four executives believe that one connected car can generate higher revenues over the entire lifecycle than 10 non-connected cars.” concluded Leech.

Celsus UK Limited appoints Anthony Zammit as National Account Manager

IAAF membership continues to grow

The Parts Alliance South West up for national Award after business turnaround

The Parts Alliance’s South West region has been nominated for a prestigious national CAT magazine Award.

There will be a total of six CAT 2017 awards to celebrate leading achievements within the UK aftermarket. The Parts Alliance (South West) has been recognised in a shortlist of only four businesses in contention to be named ‘Factor Chain of the Year’.

This year’s annual celebration will mark the 10th awards, and Haymarket’s leading aftermarket title is promising ‘a few tricks to keep the event fresh’. It will be held on 10th February at Manchester’s renowned Lowry Hotel.

It’s recognition of a real turnaround in fortunes for a group of eight branches that were once part of the Unipart network. Having been brought back from the brink, major investment from The Parts Alliance has followed their acquisition; by 2016 the South West region had quickly flourished into one of the group’s leading regions.

In October their evening Garage and Workshop Show at the home of English Premiership side Exeter Chiefs drew over 500 visitors and fifty suppliers. Garage customers were invited by all of the eight Parts Alliance branches in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.

New IFA CV member appointed

The IMTFA has announced the appointment of a new commercial vehicle parts member, Acton Commercial Factors Ltd, based in Watford and Park Royal, London

Autoinform LIVE to travel to Edinburgh

Hot on the heels of the Autoinform LIVE 2016 training event in November, the Original Equipment Suppliers Aftermarket Association (OESAA) has announced that a second event is soon to follow, this time catering to garage owners and technicians in Scotland.

Autoinform Scotland 2017 will take place on 18-19th of March at the GTG Academy in Edinburgh, following the same well-received format as its Wolverhampton counterpart which has doubled its attendance numbers year-on-year.

2017 CV Show promises to be bigger, and better

The SMMT has now started to focus on the 2017 CV Show, the UK’s largest road transport, distribution and logistics industry event.

This year the show will take place from 25-27 April and visitors can now register for a free entry pass.

Demand from exhibitors has meant the show’s organisers have expanded the floor space by 10% and visitor numbers are expected to exceed the 21,000 that attended the 2016 show.
