Nagasawa takes over from Howarth as KYB Europe Vice President

KYB Corporation has appointed Tetsunosuke Nagasawa as the new Vice President for KYB Europe Aftermarket, replacing Mike Howarth who has now left KYB for pastures new after 22 years.

Nagasawa joined KYB in 2005, in the Tokyo based aftermarket business department. He transferred to Europe in 2007, when he was responsible for export sales in Balkan and CIS areas. From April 2013 – March 2019 he was responsible for KYB Russia where, following a restructure, he successfully improved the branch performance and brand perception, and increased the market share to 30%.

Speaking about his new role at KYB Europe, Nagasawa commented “it is important to remember that KYB Europe not only sells our brand products to the aftermarket, but also support, logistic and sales services. Therefore we must create additional value for our products to make a difference for our customers. To succeed, we must be open minded and proactive. We will continue our principle to be quick and aggressive”.

KYB Europe aftermarket now has over 250 employees, with offices in 9 countries and 6 warehouses.

Plans for UK’s first fully electric refuse fleet as Veolia signs new tech-driven City waste contract

The City of London Corporation has awarded a pioneering new tech-driven waste collection, street cleansing and ancillary services contract to Veolia – with services having begun in early April. The full fleet will come online within a year.

As part of the contract, the City Corporation aims to become the first authority in the UK to run a fully electric fleet of Refuse Collection Vehicles

Veolia’s RCVs will be equipped with 360-degree cameras and audible warning reversal systems to improve safety.

The vehicles will use on-board weighing equipment to digitally record bin weights at residential properties, enabling recycling performance to be efficiently calculated. And street cleaners will carry hand-held devices for on-the-go reporting and job completion.

All vehicles will be digitally tracked to monitor and auto-allocate cleansing tasks dependant on geographical location and capacity.

The contract will deliver 74 solar auto-compacting BigBelly bins which send notifications to collection crews when they are full, allowing more waste to be collected.

The new portfolio will see Veolia managing the following areas in the Square Mile:

  • Domestic waste collection
  • Commercial waste
  • Recycling collections
  • Street cleansing
  • Winter maintenance
  • Special event preparation and clear up operations
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Gully servicing

IAAF welcomes FIGIEFA’s involvement in ExVe “Proof of Concept” testing

IAAF has championed FIGIEFA’s role in recent testing of the Extended Vehicle (ExVe) concept, as many market operators from across Europe continue to criticise vehicle manufacturers’ concept of external backend servers for third party data access.

Considered as a major aftermarket threat to competition, ExVe would prevent direct, real-time, bi-directional access to the vehicle, its functions, data and users, for independent operators, needed for undistorted competition. A practical field test carried out last year showed the technical limits of ExVe, while another study commissioned by FIA, the international association of motorists and road patrols, has highlighted its economic flaws.

Despite this evidence, the European Commission (EC) has asked the European association of VMs (ACEA), parts suppliers (CLEPA) and the AFCAR Aftermarket Alliance to run another ‘proof of concept’ of ExVe and Neutral Server (NS). It is designed to be a “stress test” showing possibilities and limitations of ExVe and NS. AFCAR accepted the invitation to participate, but only under the condition that the tests would not just focus on what the OEMs are willing to offer, but on the ability to maintain undistorted and equal access for all operators.

Against this background, and together with other stakeholders, FIGIEFA has started to conduct concrete testing in real-time conditions of its ‘Remote Diagnostic’ use case. The use case selected is the EGR valve and aims to not only address an increasingly common fault but one that has direct environmental relevance, as blocked EGR valves affect both the vehicle drivability and environmental compliance. The objective of the use case is to test how independent operators can receive relevant real time data related to the EGR valve, perform a remote diagnostic test routine, and also carry out a remote temporary repair. It has a strong market relevance, as there were over 25,000 examples last year in Germany alone, thus illustrating a real life example of an innovative digital service from an independent service provider based on technically feasible requirements.

Wendy Williamson, IAAF chief executive, said: “The ‘Remote Diagnostic’ case requires several critical abilities, including direct access to in-vehicle data, real time data analysis requiring embedded applications, communication with the driver through HMI functions and communication with the service provider‘s remote technician. As such, it should expose the impact on competition, resulting from the restricted access to the vehicle and its data, together with the latency imposed by ExVe and NS.”

The ‘proof of concept’ is scheduled to be finalised in the next few weeks.

‘Your Car – Your Choice’ pilot project – get involved

Following on from the item in last week’s eBulletin, the IAAF is keen to encourage as many of its factor/distributor members and their customers operating in the Chesterfield area to engage with this project.

As mentioned, the aim of the project is to raise awareness of the fact that motorists have the right to have their cars serviced at any garage of their choice, from new.

The campaign, organised by the IAAF, will target independent garages and motor factors with an awareness day in Chesterfield at the premises of the Bilstein Group in Markham Vale on Thursday 16 May. Here, garages will be able to quiz experts from around the trade and find out where they can go for support in challenging some of the misconceptions on garage repair and servicing within the warranty period and beyond.

The campaign has received a boost with major automotive companies signing up to support the pilot project. These include: Automechanika Birmingham, Bilstein Group, Comline, Comma, First Line, Hella, Impression Communications, MAHLE Aftermarket UK, National Auto Parts, SMPE, TMD Friction, Johnson Controls (Varta), WAIglobal UK and ZF Aftermarket.

All participating companies will feature in the pilot project’s social media campaign to garages and motorists throughout Chesterfield and surrounding areas. In addition, all IAAF distributor members in the area are invited to get involved and spread the campaign message to garages. Currently, motor factors Autosupplies (Chesterfield) and Road & Rally are playing an active role in bringing garages to the awareness day and highlighting the campaign across their own social media platforms and through their teams.

All IAAF motor factor and distributor members in the demographic catchment area covering all the main buying groups, national and local distributors are invited to take part, along with IAAF supplier members wanting to pledge their support. To take part in the pilot project, companies have until 30 April to sign up.

Douglas Robertson, RIP

It was with sadness that we learned that Douglas Robertson, who had been chief executive of the Scottish Motor Trade Association until his retirement in 2015, died in hospital on 16th April.

Our thoughts and condolences are with his family at this sad time.

We will include details of his funeral in a later issue of the eBulletin if appropriate.

Douglas was a strong supporter of the aftermarket and had been a member of the Automotive Aftermarket Liaison Group. He will be missed by colleagues throughout the UK.

Automotive festival featuring Italian Job recreation sponsored by brake brand

UK brake products manufacturer and supplier, Mintex has successfully sponsored the Bromyard Speed Festival and its celebration of some of the greats of British motor racing.

With the Speed Festival taking place on Sunday, 7 April, parades of motors took to the streets in and around Bromyard thanks to thousands of hours of work from volunteers and support from Mintext in preparation for the day.

Sunday kicked off with the official course being opened by civic dignitaries, followed by the Jaguar XKD603, which was placed in both the 1956 and 1957 Le Mans 24 Hours race, and is one of the six original long nose D Types.

It was driven by revered racing driver Willy Green, and in the passenger seat for the formation lap was Mr Norman Dewis OBE, aged 99.

Norman, Jaguar’s chief Development engineer and Jaguar team driver in the 1955 Le Mans race, was instrumental in the development of Jaguar cars from 1952-1985.

He also held the world speed record for production cars of 172mph at Jabbeke in Belgium.

At the driver’s dinner, he regaled the audience with tales of the care free racing days.

Champion of disc brake
He was also instrumental in the development of arguably one of the most important contributions to road safety in the 20th Century the disc brake.

Hitching a ride in a Jaguar was local resident Hugh Langrishe, aged 96, who was Jaguar and Le Mans driver, Ron Flockhart’s, friend and business partner.

Hugh also had many tales to tell of his times with Ron throughout his motor racing career including at BRM and the Jaguar Ecurie Ecosse team.

In convoy was Kaye Williams, a local resident aged 104 years old and the mother of famous driver the late Barrie “Whizzo” Williams.

Kaye was driven, at her request, in the Rolls-Royce used in Netflix’s The Crown production to see her husband’s and father in law’s garage and engineering premises, which had been converted for the day into a period garage, complete with regalia supplied by local twins David and Donald Reynolds, and aforementioned event sponsor Mintex (TMD Friction UK Ltd).

The garage was populated with Aston Martins, from the very rare DB3S once used by Jack Brabham, to the DB5 – the same type used in the James Bond films.

During the festival, 100 years of the Bentley marque was celebrated in the town square with cars from the early Cricklewood era, through the Derby built models and the Crewe factory cars all in one place.

A new aspect of the event this year took the form of a treasure hunt/navigation car rally held on the previous Saturday, taking the entrants along the Teme Valley up Shelsley Walsh, to Witley Court and eventually to Brockhampton, before returning to Bromyard to start the weekend’s proceedings.

Italian Job recreation
One of the many highlights of this year’s event was the recreation of the Italian Job, which involved robbing the former premises of the HSBC Bank in Bromyard using the types of cars and vehicles featured in the 1969 film.

Local garage owners Greg and Nigel Jenkins provided the classic Red, White and Blue Mini Coopers, and there was an Aston Martin DB4, the E type Jaguars and the Pakistani Ambassadors Daimler Limousine.

And the heist wouldn’t have been complete without the presence of the famous Bedford VAL 14 Harrington Legionnaire coach which is left hanging at the end of the film accompanied by the line “hang on a minute, lads, I’ve got a great idea.”

Bromyard Speed Festival was extremely grateful to the event sponsors, which were spearheaded by Mintex.

The Festival is a non-profit organisation that supports local worthy causes with surplus funds from its events.

World premiere of the new HELLA design beacon at the bauma in Munich

HELLA, the lighting and electronics expert is the first supplier to present a beacon, which combines design and state-of-the-art LED technology at bauma in Munich, the world’s leading trade fair for the construction machinery and mining sector, from 8 to 14 April 2019 (Hall A5 Stand 436). The beacon will also be present on the HELLA stand at Automechanika Birmingham in June. The design beacon is the first of its kind, which allows manufacturers in the construction and mining industry to give their vehicles a unique appearance.

The black, futuristic-looking beacon fits perfectly into the existing vehicle silhouette thanks to its design and compact dimensions of around 60 mm in height. For comparison: HELLA’s previously lowest beacon, the K-LED 2.0, has a height of 90mm. Halogen beacons sometimes even have a height of up to 194 mm.

HELLA has not only minimised the size of the beacon, but also changed the lighting concept. “This once again proves our technological leadership,” says Stefan Maierhofer, Product Manager at HELLA. The beacon doesn’t need a dome anymore. Instead, the light is visible through a circumferential, ring-shaped light band. “With this new concept, HELLA is a pioneer in the industry.”

Despite the minimal light emission area and the compact size, the beacon achieves the best light values and an ideal warning effect that meet the legal requirements of the European ECE-R 65 directive for beacons.

The LED double flash function of the warning light emits a direct and remotely visible 360° signal, which is an additional advantage to other road users who get alerted earlier, both on the construction site and the road, as well as significantly increasing occupational safety.

The beacon is maintenance-free and due to its low total current consumption and high-quality, long-life LEDs, it is suitable for continuous use. In addition, the vehicle battery is conserved.

The beacon complies with IP (International Protection) classes 67 and 9K. This means it is resistant to dust and water, and the electronics are protected to a water depth of up to one metre, when submerged for a short time. In addition, the warning light is resistant to stronger stresses such as shocks and blows or temperature fluctuations, road salt and moisture. This is ensured by the polycarbonate light band, the powder-coated aluminium housing and the absence of moving parts. Therefore, the beacon can also be used in adverse conditions. Finally, it also meets the prescribed values for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and so does not interfere with any other radio signals.

HELLA was the first supplier to launch a beacon on the market in 1955 and the first LED beacon followed in 2006. In addition to halogen lamps, the company currently has 14 LED beacons in its product range and introduced the K-LED Blizzard in 2017. The lighting and electronics expert is now presenting its latest design beacon to the public for the first time at bauma.

Excel Automotive Group under new ownership

Excel Automotive Group (EAG) has been acquired by Tony Bhogal, owner of Sancorp Ltd and managing director of Autoelectro, in partnership with son, Harry, from TVS Motor Group Ltd (Universal Components Ltd). The new owners have appointed Adrian Lamb managing director of EAG, while Harry Bhogal will be responsible for the company’s day-to-day operations.

Lamb’s automotive aftermarket experience spans more than three decades. He began his career in parts distribution before moving over to the supply sector.

“I am delighted to be at the forefront of this new chapter in EAG’s history,” he said.“I believe the company has unfinished business, and while the industry has evolved significantly over the years, with the support of Tony and Harry, I am confident we can return the brand to itsformer glory – we’ll certainly give it a go.”

Harry Bhogal, meanwhile, said he was “thrilled” to be creating his own legacy in the automotive sector: “There is a lot of experience for me to draw upon, which I believe will be crucial as I begin this new role; however, I am ready to step up and stamp my own authority, as we look to put EAG at the forefront of customers’ minds.”

EAG stocks more than 2,500 part numbers, which include steering and suspension components, wheel bearing kits, coil springs, torsional vibration dampers and strut top mountings.

The company will soon move into a refurbished warehouse in Leeds, but, in the meantime, business will continue as normal and will supply from Barnsley until the move is concluded.

Connected and autonomous vehicle technology sees UK 5G trial

Millbrook Proving Ground, a UK connected and autonomous vehicle testing and development facility, is set to begin trialling 5G connectivity.

Network operator O2 has announced it will provide 5G network connection to Millbrook from June 2019, in advance of its wider 5G rollout across the UK’s capitals – London, Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff – later in the year. Early trials of 5G networks at the facility have seen vehicles transmit data in large quantities and at high speeds in order to facilitate smart traffic operation by providing real-time information on traffic flows and potential hazards. In a trial in early 2019, a McLaren sports car was able to both send and receive data at rates of up to one gigabit per second, while travelling at speeds of up to 160 miles per hour (257 kilometres per hour); and a fleet of vehicles connected to the same network was able to share UltraHD 4K video in real time.

O2 is providing 5G connectivity for connected and autonomous vehicle testing in partnership with the AutoAir 5G scheme, which aims to boost the widespread adoption of smart transport solutions, including connected mobility and self-driving vehicles. Members of AutoAir, which operates with a budget of just under £10.5 million (€12.15 million) from government funding and private investment, include Millbrook Proving Ground, MacLaren Applied Technologies; and the 5G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey.

Brendan O’Reilly, chief technology officer of O2, said: “5G will play a key role in how our country develops over the next few years. If implemented properly, 5G has the potential to drive economic growth, create jobs and enable a new host of technologies – including self-driving vehicles. That’s why we’re delighted to be supporting the trial activity at Millbrook, alongside ambitious partners who share our vision of building a truly mobile Britain.”

5G network connectivity is beginning to roll out across the UK: Vodafone began a pilot scheme earlier this month which saw 5G connections tested by passengers at Birmingham’s New Street Station.
