The 2018 IAAF Conference & Dinner will be held for the second consecutive year at The DoubleTree by Hilton, Milton Keynes, one of the city’s iconic meeting and sporting venues, overlooking the impressive ArenaMK, home to MK Dons FC. The evening ceremony will be attended by around 600 aftermarket personnel, where industry-leading motor factors and suppliers will once again be competing to win the coveted awards in recognition of their services, as voted for by fellow IAAF members, from a shortlist of aftermarket companies.

ZF Aftermarket’s modular and interactive blended learning concept has been certified by a number of international public organizations and ensures optimal learning success with significantly reduced attendance time, and therefore lower costs.

An internal “train-the-trainer” program ensures that global workshops can acquire the necessary know-how to handle high-voltage technology. In line with demand, ZF Aftermarket has already trained High Voltage trainers in Germany, Great Britain, China and other Asian countries. Further trainers will qualify in the coming year and support workshop partners in Southern and Western Europe and North America.

Helping to shape the transition phase while the market reaches full penetration of electric vehicles will be a significant step for ZF. In support of this, the business recently announced a partnership with the Munich-based innovative engineering company in-tech GmbH. In essence the cooperation project “e-troFit” is about converting buses and commercial vehicles from conventional to electrical drivelines.

Here, ZF Aftermarket acts as the systems supplier. With the AxTrax AVE low-floor portal axle for city buses and the CeTrax electric central drive, ZF Aftermarket provides the vehicle components and necessary knowhow for converting and servicing. ZF’s partner in-tech is responsible for configuring the control technology. Helmut Ernst describes this conversion opportunity as a ‘bridge technology’ until sufficient buses and commercial vehicles with electric drives are on the market. “With etroFit, bus operators can convert their buses from conventional to emission-free driving within just four weeks. For a bus with an average life span of ten years, the savings potential for fuel alone can reach up to EUR 100,000.” A convincing argument in times of economic uncertainty.

Another area of sustainable economizing in which ZF Aftermarket actively pursues its set course is remanufacturing. For Helmut Ernst, remanufacturing used vehicle parts is not just an “ecological necessity” but also a “sign of economic reason”. Today, ZF Aftermarket operates 15 global remanufacturing facilities producing products ranging from steering systems for passenger cars to construction machinery transmissions. One of these locations is the remanufacturing plant in Frýdlant in the Czech Republic. Here, almost 400 employees remanufacture mechanical and hydraulic parts, and increasingly more mechatronic and electronic components. The advantages of remanufacturing are clear: Compared to newly manufactured products, remanufacturing requires between 50 and 90 percent less raw materials. At the same time, it saves around 90 percent of energy. In addition, replacing entire units can be more efficient than repairing individual parts within the component. This leads to significantly shorter vehicle downtime, and is more cost-efficient leading to higher customer satisfaction.

The mobility of tomorrow has to be sustainable. Conserving resources, ensuring a safe and comfortable drive whilst at the same time meeting individual mobility needs lead the list of criteria along which the concepts of tomorrow need to be oriented.

“Because of My Service Trust business is booming!”

We had a very rewarding trip up to Stirling in Scotland recently to see how long-term customer, Kilgannon Motors was getting on with My Service Trust.

Kilgannon Motors is run by Jamie Kilgannon, who has over 35 years experience in the industry, of which the last 28 years have been spent running his own business. He started from very humble beginnings with a single ramp in a small garage. Since then, Jamie has worked tirelessly to build up his business and reputation from that of a small family business into the successful enterprise that we see today.

We first met Jamie about two years ago, one cold damp October afternoon following a referral by local sales rep, Duncan Davidson from Dingbro, who runs the ServiceSure concept in Scotland. Jamie was keen to explore new technology that would help put him on a level playing field with the main dealers and improve his customer experience and satisfaction… we had just the thing!

Jamie recently said “If you have any aspirations of growing your business, you’ve got to think forward, you’ve got to think where the customers are coming from, whether that’s a main dealer, or an independent, that’s your competition! How do you make yourself stand out?

“We are now in an era where if you don’t utilise the modern technology that is at your fingertips, and use it in a proper manner, then you’re not running your business properly. I can assure you, if you invest in this (My Service Trust) properly and put a process in place, you will find your efficiencies go up, your retention goes up, customer satisfaction goes up, but most importantly to your business, your profits will go up too.”

Jamie’s new premises are an ex-Skoda main dealership in the heart of the community. Ironically, in the very building Jamie started his apprenticeship 35 years ago. Back then, the building was smaller and owned by an independent, but now the new premises have been expanded and boast five service bays, an MOT bay, a valeting bay (for his car sales business) and a modern showroom and reception for both his garage and dealership customers to be welcomed with open arms.

During the first three months of sending videos, Jamie’s parts spend with his local motor factor went up by 30%. He now employs 14 staff to service and repair his customers’ vehicles and is building up the car sales side of the business too, for which he has taken advantage of our My Sales Trust video solution.

Jamie said “Since we invested in My Service Trust, we’re looking at a 15-20% uplift in the business it gives us and we turnover more than £500k. So 15% of half a million turnover is a very, very good return on investment!”

New IAAF Signage now available

In response to many requests from members, the IAAF has developed a new brushed aluminium sign which it is hoped will be displayed in a prominent place in members’ premises to promote their membership of the IAAF.

Truck & Trailer Components were the first member company to send in an image of how they had displayed their new sign.

The signs are now available from the IAAF Office at a charge of £20 + VAT inc. P&P.

Roadlink champions UK remanufacturing in Frankfurt

Roadlink International says UK remanufacturing is still the “envy of the world” following its successful attendance at Automechanika Frankfurt.

The leading commercial vehicle parts supplier, exhibiting as part of the SMMT’s ‘Business is Great’ pavilion in Hall 5.1, promoted its comprehensive range of new and remanufactured braking solutions, including calipers, brake shoes, pads, discs and drums, as well as a market-leading range of UK manufactured Bryden brake shoe riveting machines to export customers.

Roadlink has continued to invest in its CV brake caliper manufacturing facility in the UK and explained to visitors the efficiency and diligence that goes into the remanufacturing process, detailing each step including: Examining the caliper core; stripping and washing the core components, checking for quality, damage and excessive wear to all usable components; building the caliper with new OE quality parts; and finally extensive testing to ensure quality.

Remanufacturing in the UK currently contributes approximately £4.3billion to the UK economy with this figure expected to grow dramatically thanks to further investment. Remanufacturing is not only good for the environment through the reduction of CO2 emissions but reduces raw material and energy consumption.

The announcement follows an extremely successful showcase at last month’s Automechanika Frankfurt, which the supplier says was a result of visitors in attendance putting quality as their first buying criteria. Malvern garage becomes 100th new Servicesure site for 2018

Malvern-based Daniels Vehicle Services has become the 100th garage to join the Servicesure garage network in 2018.

This century of sign-ups, achieved in less than nine months, is a record for The Parts Alliance’s industry-leading garage programme.

Daniels Vehicle Services has been meeting the car maintenance requirements of Malvern motorists for over 50 years. The former Renault specialist now caters to all makes, delivering ‘exceptional customer service’ through strong retention of trained technicians.

The garage opted to join Servicesure after being approached by the Malvern branch of Parts Alliance member Bromsgrove Motor Factors.

“Once we heard about Servicesure we were impressed by all the things we could access,” said Service Director Steve Berryman. “It meets our product needs but also offers added customer assurance; it’s a partnership that we believe will help show we are a professional garage wanting to do things the right way.”

Daniels Vehicle Services has worked with BMF Malvern regularly over the last 5 years, citing access to quality brands on key products like braking as the prime reason.

Schaeffler invests €60Mio in new automotive OEM headquarters

Schaeffler is to create 350 new jobs by investing €60 million into building its new automotive OEM headquarters, following a global surge in the demand for e-mobility products by vehicle producers.

Located in Bühl, the historical home town of LuK, the new HQ will be the central control hub for managing Schaeffler’s e-mobility plants and activities around the world. All of these facilities will enhance the development of new drive technologies designed to simplify travel in towns and cities, and produce the systems and components that will help vehicles become more environmentally friendly.

As well as creating enough office space for more than 500 employees, the building will also house advanced prototype construction and test rig facilities.

Georg F. W. Schaeffler and Klaus Rosenfeld, Chairman and CEO of Schaeffler AG, were among those who joined the celebrations which marked the start of the build.

Georg said: “This new building will be a milestone in Schaeffler’s history. We chose Bühl because we all appreciate the hard work and excellent results that have been achieved here over the last few decades.”

Klaus added: “By building our new automotive OEM headquarters in Bühl, we are one step closer to becoming what we want to be: a single Schaeffler Group, with one global strategy and one set of strong values.”

The construction of the new Bühl headquarters will also help to increase momentum in the ongoing Schaeffler strategy of ‘Mobility for Tomorrow’.

InAutomotive looking for support in Bangers4Ben 2018

From 5th-9th October, the InAutomotive team will be attempting to travel 1500 miles across Europe in a car worth no more than £750.00 to raise money for automotive charity, Ben Support for Life.

Bangers4Ben is a 4 day event by Car Dealer Magazine and motor industry charity BEN, where participants have to travel to Italy in a banger worth no more than £750.00. Once back in the UK, the cars are sold at auction with all the proceeds being donated to Ben.

Ben Support for Life is a not-for-profit organisation that partners with the automotive industry to provide support for life to its people & their families.

Ben provides a range of services, covering a person’s core well-being from financial and social support to physical and mental well-being and provides this care to anyone related to the industry and that falls in need. In addition, Ben’s services also extend right through to that person’s immediate family ensuring far reaching support.

This will be a very challenging but no doubt entertaining event for InAutomotive’s representatives Thomas Lowcock and Shuhel Miah, who are eagerly awaiting the challenge. Thomas and Shuhel will be giving daily updates on their progress and experience throughout the competition. There will be plenty of pictures, video diaries and more from the event itself throughout its course, and InAutomotive are looking for help to reach their goal of raising £2,000!

When they get back to the UK, the car will be sold at auction with all of the proceeds being donated to Ben Support For Life. But exactly what car is it that they will be using for the challenge? InAutomotive are almost ready to announce the car …so watch out for the big reveal on their social media channels!

Monmore’s charity cycle marathon raises over £500

Wolverhampton-based motor factor Monmore Autoparts staff have raised more than £500 after completing the Wolverhampton 20K cycle marathon on Sunday 2 September at West Park.

Monmore is raising money for Compton Care, a local charity that believes life with a complex or incurable illness doesn’t have to be limited.

It is passionate about helping people live the best life possible and do this by providing extraordinary clinical care and the very best emotional, practical and spiritual support.

Craig McCracken, group factor manager, said: “We’re extremely proud of all those who took part and raised money for such a fantastic charity. We’ve smashed the target and the figure is still rising thanks to last minute donations.”
